Changing energy markets

Over the next ten years, demand for renewable energy is expected to surge throughout the EU – driven by legislation, concern about the climate change and high age of many existing nuclear and coal-fired power plants.

20% in 2020

The EU targets an overall reduction of greenhouse emissions of at least 20% below the 1990 level. The share of renewable energy sources is to rise to 20% by 2020. The EU member states are currently implementing these targets in their national legislation. Globally, binding targets have yet to be agreed on, but the trend is inevitable: the utilization of renewable energy sources will increase rapidly over the next many years.
